More Than 35 People and Six Pets Used the Shelter - Patch.com

The shelter at Montville High School had nearly 40 people at its peak, said Dawn Davis, an EMT and firefighter who is overseeing the operation.

There was even a family from Albuquerque, NM, who was here for the pow-wow. One of the kids in the family could be heard calling friends back home, telling them how excited he was to be in a hurricane!

Three dogs and three cats ended up staying in the shelter. Animal Control Officer Chris Martel said there were no problems at all with the animals. The town had plenty of crates on hand for animals brought in by evacuees. The animals stayed in the wrestling room, where their owners could visit and take them out as needed.

Davis said that while some people came in before the storm started, many showed up on Sunday morning, when the wind and rain was at its most frightening.

Several people from Salem used the shelter, too, as Salem did not have a shelter of its own.

Brittany and Nicole "Fancy Pants" Anderson, and Tammy and RJ Cyr, showed up Sunday afternoon at the shelter to use charge their mobile devices. They were laughing and happy, as the storm passed, though they'd been hoping to get some fast food – no go in Montville Sunday afternoon.

Stop & Shop was open, and Home Depot was open, but that was about it.

Montville schools are closed today.

Davis said the operation at the high school went smoothly. There were plenty of bed, there was plenty of food, and there were no disruptions in power. It was hot in the school, but there were few complaints.

Neither the Emergency Operations Center nor the Montville Police Department could be reached this morning.
