The Pascack Brook, pictured here where it crosses Kinderkamack Road in Westwood, overflowed its banks on Saturday and Sunday and caused flooding in Hillsdale and Westwood.

"This is a serious situation," Birkner said of the aftermath of Hurricane Irene.

As of 11:45 a.m. the Pascack Brook was being measured at a stage height of 8.48 ft. - the major flood stage for the brook is 5.5 ft., according to National Weather Service readings.

Power is out for a majority of the borough, Birkner said.

A command center being operated by the fire department is located at the corner of McKinley and Steuben avenues.

Parts of Steuben Avenue and Nugent Place have been flooded with as much as 10 feet of water, Birkner said.

The River Vale Swift Water Rescue Team and Westwood emergency personnel have been working throughout the morning and into this afternoon.

Westwood's emergency shelter is up and running at 55 Jefferson Ave. Pets are welcome, but it is recommended to bring them in a crate or container.

"If you don't need to leave your home, please stay home," Birkner said. "Clear the roads and allow our emergency personnel to do their jobs. If you need help or need to be rescued please call the Westwood Police Department."
