Emergency Shelter Open to Pets - Patch.com

If you find yourself having to leave your home during the storm and need shelter, you can head to the Attleboro High School which has been set up as a shelter by the American Red Cross. With a little planning you can take your pets with youas well. Animal Control is working with the State Veterinarian and State of Massachusetts Animal Response Team and they have secured two rooms for the animals at the shelter.

To bring pets to the shelter you will need to bring:

  • Documentation certificate from the vet
  • A crate (there may be some available on a first come basis)
  • Collars andleashes
  • Bottled water and bowls
  • Food, medication, cat litter

According to Kim Penque, president of Friends of Attleboro Animal Shelter, the shelter may be in need of additional bags of food and litter as the shelter buys that in bulk. Aditional information and instructions can be found on the Attleboro Pets FaceBook page.

"We are preparing our emergency response team and actions should we need to transport animals and to assist with community animals. We have about 6 crates coming in from folks who are allowing us to use them just in case. These crates will be tagged and returned after the State of Emergency is over," Penque said of their preparations at the Attleboro High School shelter.

In the case of an evacuation the shelter will also need tarps becuase the room designated for animals will need to be tarped off before crates are placed in the room.

One of the biggest difficulties facing the shelter is with the cats since the ity has no ordinance in place for Cats. The responsibility all lies on FAAS. Cuurently a plan is in place with Animal Control and FAAS regarding transporting animals.
