Preparing your pet for Hurricane Irene - Examiner.com

As Hurricane Irene is fast approaching shores along the East Coast, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is calling upon emergency responders to help rescue and shelter animals displaced by the storm. Members of the ASPCA's Field Investigations and Response Team are working alongside the New York City Office of Emergency Management (OEM) and the OEM's Animal Planning Task Force to assist with the city's disaster relief efforts.

The ASPCA encourages owners of pets to prepare an emergency plan in the event of a storm and need to evacuate. "Disasters threaten the safety of people and animals alike, and it's often too late to create a plan for your pets when you're in the middle of a crisis," says Tim Rickey, Senior Director of the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team. For families who must leave their homes, evacuation centers and emergency shelters in New York City will be pet friendly, and people are encouraged to evacuate with their pets. Please call 311 to find an evacuation center. All New York City taxis are required to take animals.

At the first sign of a storm, the ASPCA urges pet owners to provide a shelter for your pets so they do not become frightened and escape. Pet owners are also urged to keep an emergency kit on hand that includes pet food, bottled water, medical records, blankets, a flashlight, and leashes. In addition, owners should put collars on all their pets as well as taping a rescue alert sticker to your door so rescuers will know there are pets inside your home, and choose a designated care giver to care for the pet if necessary.
