Two men were arrested early Saturday morning after a Columbus police dog found them in a bean field near the northwest Bartholomew County business they allegedly stole from.

John E. McIntosh, 45, of Hope, and Robert Luetke, 43, of Columbus, were each preliminarily charged with burglary and theft, said Bartholomew County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Maj. Todd Noblitt.

Noblitt said deputies were alerted at 2:49 a.m. Saturday to an alarm at Country Bins on Road 550N. Upon arrival, deputies found a damaged door where it appeared someone had entered the business. They didn't see anyone in the building, but they did find a red Ford pick-up truck parked at a nearby barn, he said.

Deputies set up a perimeter and called for a Columbus Police Department K-9 unit.

Columbus police dog Rex, handled by officer Chad Lehman, tracked a scent about 200 yards east of Country Bins to a bean field, where they found McIntosh laying on the ground, Noblitt said. Deputies were escorting McIntosh to a patrol car when they came across Luetke, who was also laying in the field, he said.

Noblitt said the red truck deputies found earlier was registered to Luetke.

Luetke was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail.

McIntosh was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital, where he was treated for injuries from the police dog, before he was taken into custody, Noblitt said.

McIntosh and Luetke were being held at the jail on $35,000 bond each.
