Fish Dominates in Opening Round - New York Times (blog)

Shrugging off nerves in the opening minutes, Mardy Fish of the United States cruised to victory over Tobias Kamke of Germany, 6-2, 6-2, 6-1, on Monday to move into the second round of the 2011 United States Open.

Fish, the leading American player, started shakily, double faulting and facing a break point in first game of match, then yielded his serve by pushing a forehand far over the baseline. Betraying an uncommon attack of jitters, Fish began missing a series of shots, spraying a forehand wide and a backhand into the net to lose four consecutive points and five out of six.

But the eighth-seeded Fish, of Tampa, Fla., steadied and raised his game, breaking Kamke's serve twice to lead 5-2. Then, in a scramble of net rushes and strong defensive forehands, he claimed the first set in 46 minutes.

Then Kamke, 25, whose best tournament result this year was a semifinal loss to John Isner at Newport, began to falter, falling behind 3-0 and 4-2 in the second set by dropping his serve for the third and fourth time.

Fish, 29, who reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals and the finals of all four U.S. Open warm-up tournaments, dominated the net, claiming more than a dozen points in the forecourt by the middle of the second set.

Kamke failed to respond and found himself trapped at the baseline, where Fish stranded him by hitting 20 winners (Kamke hit only nine) to take a two-set lead.

Thirteen minutes into the final set, Fish broke Kamke's serve for a sixth time and forged a 3-1 lead he never relinquished.

In the second round, Fish faces the winner of a match between Malek Jaziri of Tunisia and Thiemo de Bakker of the Netherlands, the Wimbledon junior champion and world's top-ranked junior in 2006.
