Musician insists he's not playing for the prairie dogs - 9NEWS.com

BOULDER - Danny Meyer will tell you he never intended to become the "prairie dog dude." It just sort of happened, he figures.

"People now seem to think that I come out here to play for the prairie dogs," he said with a smile as he lifts his saxophone.

He doesn't, he insists, play for them. If they happen to listen, well, that's just a bonus.

"It seems like they're less bothered with me here, and they seem to stay a little longer out of their holes than they used to," he said.

It was about a year and a half ago when he started playing his sax outside in Boulder's open space.

"Practice rooms tend to be small rooms with no windows," he said. "This is a place where you can walk and play. Acoustically speaking, it's just interesting to play outside."

For about a year, he did so in relative anonymity.

"I think most people just thought I was crazy," he said.

In May, a reporter with the Boulder Daily Camera came to watch him play. The ensuing story resulted in an instant step up in terms of recognition.

People now ask him constantly if he's the guy they read about in the paper.

"Yep, I'm that guy," he'll tell them.

It's actually led to a number of interesting conversations. Do prairie dogs like jazz? Do they listen to him at all? But the most important questions, he figures, are the ones that allow him to talk about his love of music.

That is why he continues to come out here; practice, practice, practice.

"If you're going to call yourself a carpenter, you should try to be a good carpenter. If you're a doctor, you should know everything you can about medicine. And if you want to be a musician, you should try to be a great musician," he said. "Yet, it's very hard to make a living as a musician."

That's what he wants, above all, he'll tell his inquisitive fans. He loves teaching music, which he does regularly in Boulder. But he really just loves standing on a stage on any given Saturday night.

"I want to show the world that I would do this as a full time job if you'll let me," he said.
