Animal shelters crowded with "Irene" pets - WNYT

There's a population of pets that are fast becoming known as "Irene Animals."
These are the animals who were displaced from all over the area, after their owners were flooded out of their homes.
News Channel 13 visited the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society Tuesday night - just one local shelter bursting at the seams with pets, now desperate for dry, new homes.
When Kim Gillespie saw so many animals reaching out and ready to be loved when she went to the shelter to adopt a pet, they tugged on her emotions.
"So many animals need a good home, after people lost their own homes, it's a sad situation."
And while her new puppy Jackson isn't a so called Irene dog, adopting the two-year-old terrier mix frees up a spot for an animal at the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society so there are no forgotten faces after the flood.
Tina Murray of the Mohawk Hudson Humane Society said, "People don't want to give up their pet when they don't have a home to go to or have to move some place, and the pet is unfortunately the one that gets displaced."
Murray says the staff at Mohawk Hudson Humane Society hasn't increased with the spike in furry flood victims.
So they are putting out a plea for more volunteers, supplies and donations; anything to help care for animals that have been through more stress in recent weeks than possibly ever before.
Murray says every animal on the floor is social, vaccinated and waiting for someone like Kim Gillespie.
"At capacity" means there are more than 100 dogs and 400 cats are at the humane society right now.
