MAINE -- Michelle Henry has two passions that might not seem connected: photography and pet grooming.
But Henry, 39, has found a way to run two businesses that make use of her seemingly different interests.
Earlier this year, Henry opened Pawz & Whiskerz, a dog and cat grooming business, and Pawz & Printz, a photography studio that focuses largely on animals and children.
"A lot of people will come in for a groom and then have their pet portraits," said Henry, who operates the businesses out of her home at 11985 N. 72nd Ave., in the town of Maine.
Henry said she wanted to find a way to incorporate her interests into a career while being able to work out of her home to care for her two children.
She first trained as a groomer roughly 15 years ago in Wausau, but she later left the field to pursue other interests. However, with the knowledge in her back pocket and a love for animals, she figured now was an ideal time to jump back into the business.
Pawz & Whiskerz is a full-service groomer for dogs and cats. Henry offers everything from bathing to cuts for any breed. A "full groom" consists of nail trims, ear cleaning, a bath, cut and clearing the animal's anal glands.
"It's like I never stopped (grooming pets)," she said. "I've always had my own dogs, so it's not like I completely stopped."
For Pawz & Printz, Henry focuses on children and animals, but said she also shoots senior and family portraits. Photography is a longtime passion, so Henry figured she could try to make a business out of it.
While prices for different photo packages vary, Henry said she tries to keep costs down for customers.
"I don't charge a lot," she said. "It's something I love to do, but I know the economy is hurting a lot of people."
Henry said she tries to set herself apart when working with children to really focus on capturing the children's personalities.
"I take them out on the playground and tell them to go play and then click pictures," she said. "You see the child for who they really are."
Pawz & Whiskerz and Pawz & Printz are open from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, and on Saturday by appointment. To schedule an appointment or for more information, call 715-675-9218 or email picsby

What's up
with Kohl's?
RIB MOUNTAIN -- Kohl's on Wednesday unveiled its remodeled store with a grand reopening.
The store, at 3600 Rib Mountain Drive, underwent a handful of renovations, giving the store an updated look.
Regular shoppers should immediately notice the changes, which include: redesigned home and junior's departments; updated children's, jewelry and shoe departments; and updated fitting rooms.
Also, the store added new merchandise displays, a revamped customer service desk and checkout stations in the front of the store, according to the company.
The remodeled Rib Mountain location is one of about 100 Kohl's stores being remodeled this year, an 18 percent increase from the number of stores renovated last year, the company said.

What's up with
Stine Eye Center?
WESTON -- Optometrist Doug Stine has had a new kind of retinal camera for almost a year, and it's made a tremendous difference in diagnosing retinal diseases more accurately and earlier than ever before. And that's a godsend, he said.
"This machine shows things you couldn't fathom before," Stine said. "We now have a lot more information than we did before. It's changed the way we diagnose patients."
The Heidelberg Engineering Spectralis retinal scanner takes images of the different layers of the retina, which can be cross-sectioned to see each layer. Previously, Stine's scanner showed only the surface of the retina.
Stine said the machine has been especially useful in treating patients with glaucoma, diabetes, multiple sclerosis and macular degeneration. Lindsey Peshel, a technician at Stine Eye Center, said the machine has been especially helpful in diagnosing retinal tears. Costs for the test vary by patient and insurance plans.
