September pet events: Walks, fests and a herding competition - The Seattle Times

Head into fall with some fun and educational pet events including PAWSwalk, FidoFest, dog hikes, adoption events and even a sheepdog competition.

Herald's Excellent Adventure: Noon and 3:30 p.m. daily through Monday, Sept. 5, after that the hours are noon and 3:30 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 25, Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium, Tacoma. It's back-to-school time and Herald, a rescue dog, has a few lessons to share about living with pets and the wildlife around us. He's performing at the zoo's Wild Wonders Outdoor Theater. The program is free with zoo admission.

Doggie Day at Black Diamond Labor Days: 10-11:30 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 3, Black Diamond Elementary School, 25314 Baker St., Black Diamond. Pooches get a chance to join the fun with musical hoops and treat toss games, contests for best costume and other categories, a pup parade and demonstrations in agility, obedience and police K-9 skills.

Dog adoption workshop: 11 a.m.-1p.m. Saturday, Sept. 3, Canine Behavior Center, 7551 205th Ave. N.E., Redmond. This Pawsitive Alliance program offers tips on selecting the right dog for your family and how to integrate the dog into your household. $20. Register at julie@sgmfx.com.

Dogs Welcome hike: 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5, Issaquah Alps Trail Club clubhouse, First and Bush streets, Issaquah. Dogs welcome on a 6-10 mile hike with 800- to 1,600-foot elevation gain. Bring water, food, daypack and hiking shoes. Shorter hikes are slated for Sept. 18 and 23. (Check the club's website for details.)

PAWSwalk: Check-in opens at 8 a.m., walk starts at 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 10. Magnuson Park, Seattle. See what's new at the park while participating in a 5K walk that benefits PAWS. The 20th anniversary event includes a Kids Zone, canine-agility course, FlyBall demonstrations, free samples, vendors, adoptable dogs and contests. Think your dog is a good citizen? Take the Canine Good Citizen Certification Test ($15) while at the event. Register for the walk at PAWSwalk.net.

Pooch Pool Party: Saturday, Sept. 10, Stewart Heights Pool, 402 E. 56th St., Tacoma. Dogs will have the chance to splish and splash in pool, Lazy River and spray area. There will be three 90-minute shifts starting at 10 a.m. It's $10 for the first dog, $5 for the second with a limit of two dogs per person. Dog owners can watch for free. In addition to the water fun, there will be contests and an agility course. Donations of pet food will benefit Dugan Foundation.

Cool Canines & Fabulous Felines Adoption Event: Noon-3p.m., Sunday, Sept. 11, Woodinville PetSmart, 17845 Garden Way N.E., Woodinville. More than 40 cats and 100 dogs will be available for adoption. Adoption fees are $150-$250 and include shots, spaying/neutering and a microchip ID. If you're trying to find a new house mate for your dog, bring him to the event. Trainers will be on hand to answer questions and help find a good match.

Fabulous Felines Seattle : Noon-3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, Meadowbrook Community Center 10517 35th Ave. N.E., Seattle. This Seattle Animal Shelter event offers cats that are ready to move from foster care to move to their forever homes.

Cool City Pets: 1-3 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, Seattle Animal Shelter, 2061 15th Ave. W., Seattle. Hamsters, rabbits, gerbils and mice are a few of the small animals available for adoption. For detailed driving directions, call 206-386-7387 or click here.

Sexless Soiree: 5-10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 17, WithinSodo, 2916 Utah Ave. S. Seattle. Feral Cat Spay/Neuter Project hosts a fundraising auction. Tickets are $75.

Eat, Drink and be Meowy: 6-10 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 24, The Wine Outlet, 946 Elliott Avenue W. Seattle. The no-kill shelter Animal Talk Rescue hosts a benefit auction. Tickets are $40 until Sept. 17 when the price climbs to $50.

Walk for the Animals and FidoFest: 9-11 a.m. walk and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. festival, Sunday, Sept. 25, University Village, Seattle. The benefit walk for Seattle Humane Society is about 2.25 miles or you can opt for the 1-mile route through the Union Bay Natural Area Trails. The registration fee is $30 and participants receive a T-shirt and a pet bandana. At FidoFest, meet adoptable animals, take part in contests or check out the vendors.

Vashon Sheepdog Classic: Friday, Sept. 30,-Sunday, Oct. 2, Misty Isle Farms, Old Mill Road and Southwest 220th Street, Vashon. Watch about 100 dogs and their handlers show off their skills in rounding up sheep. Dress for the weather and pack a lawn chair and binoculars. $5 for spectators. Children under 12 get in free. Well-behaved, quiet and vaccinated dogs on leash are welcome to watch. Guests are asked to not approach or touch the working dogs without permission of the handlers. Click here for directions.

Tips: Before heading out, check the event website (click on the event name) to make sure your pet is welcome and for schedule changes. Also, be sure to have an appropriate leash (6-foot, nonretractable leashes are usually recommended), poop-scoop bags and water.
