— An afternoon fire destroyed a Corpus Christi house Monday, leaving a family without a home and killing at least one pet.

Though she lost nearly everything, Linda Rosales said she is thankful firefighters were able to save the urn holding her mother's ashes.

"Now I have my whole family," she said clutching the soot-covered urn.

Emergency responders were called about 1:30 p.m. to the white wooden house in the 4900 block of Dody Street near McArdle Road. It took more than 10 minutes to get the flames under control, Capt. J.D. Brown said.

Firefighters believe the blaze started in a shed connected to the home, sending damaging smoke and flames throughout the house, he said. The cause is under investigation.

No one was home when the fire started, and no injuries were reported.

Rosales lives at the house with several of her children and grandchildren. She moved in several years ago to care for her ailing mother, who died about two years ago, she said.

Her son Santos Rosales, 27, was headed to school when friends called him saying his mother's house was on fire.

"I looked outside and I could see a big cloud of smoke in the distance," he said.

One of the family's pets was found dead and another is missing, firefighters said. Haley, the family's Jack Russell terrier, survived and after the fire was lapping water from a bowl near Rosales' granddaughter.

The family is uncertain where they will stay, Rosales said.

Rosales has several adult children living in the area but she said they have small apartments.

An American Red Cross spokeswoman said the agency is assisting five adults and seven children living at the home with food, clothing and temporary lodging.

The house did not have insurance, Rosales said.
