Why do puppies choose shoes?

I made Ben the most comfie vari kennel bed full of sheepskin, and bought all these toys... and this morning he says - ooh, old Merrill's by the door - great bed-toy combo!

I moved him to his bed once he was asleep, and he insisted he needs to lie right at the exit.
